Everyday & Lifestyle Calculators

Quick calculators for common daily situations like discounts, tipping and comparing unit prices.

About these calculators

Three quick calculators for everyday money decisions live here. Discount Calculator takes an original price and a discount percentage, with an optional second percentage applied to the reduced price, and shows the final price, the amount saved and the effective discount as a share of the original price. Tip Calculator takes a bill, a tip percentage and a number of people, then shows the tip, the total and each person's share, with any leftover cents shared out so the shares add up to the total. Unit Price Calculator compares two to four products by price, quantity and unit, in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, milliliters, liters, US fluid ounces or a plain count, and shows the price per 100 g, 100 ml or item, the best value and the percentage saved against each of the others.

All three work with plain numbers and no currency symbol, so they suit any currency. The Tip Calculator treats a blank or zero number of people as one person, so its per-person line simply equals the total. It splits the bill evenly and applies one tip percentage to the whole bill. The Discount Calculator handles at most two percentage discounts and does not take fixed-amount coupons or tax. The Unit Price Calculator refuses to compare a weight with a volume, because that needs a product's density, and it looks only at price per unit, not at quality or whether you will use a larger pack. Use the Discount Calculator when a price is marked down by a percentage, the Tip Calculator when a bill needs splitting and the Unit Price Calculator in the shop aisle. Each page explains its formula and gives a worked example. Fuel cost and other running costs of a car are in the Vehicle & Fuel category, and the calculations run in your browser.
