How it works

The image is decoded directly in your browser using an open-source QR-reading library — nothing is uploaded to a server. QR codes have built-in error correction, so this works reliably even on photos taken at a slight angle or with modest image quality.

Getting the best results

• Make sure the whole QR code is visible in the image, without cropping
• Good, even lighting works better than harsh shadows or glare
• Screenshots of a QR code generally decode more reliably than photos

A worked example

A code created from https://example.com/menu decodes to exactly that text, and because it begins with http:// or https:// an Open link button appears beside Copy. A code holding WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe;P:secret123;; decodes to that string and shows no Open link button, since it is not a web address. The tool shows the content and leaves the next step to you.

What it reads

• One image at a time, up to 50 MB, in any format your browser can display.
• Only one code is returned. If a picture holds several, crop it to the one you want.
• Both dark-on-light and inverted light-on-dark codes are read.
• Plain text, web addresses, email and phone links and Wi-Fi details all come back as plain text; only web addresses get a link button.
• If nothing is found, the tool reports that no QR code was detected rather than guessing.

Scanning safely

A code can lead anywhere, including pages made to look like a bank or parcel service. Read the address before you open it, be wary of codes on stickers placed over other codes, and never enter passwords or payment details on a page you reached from an unknown code. Seeing the address first is the main advantage of decoding an image instead of tapping through.
