The formula

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Each person's share = Total ÷ Number of people.

Worked example

An 850 bill with a 15% tip split four ways: the tip is 127.50 and the total is 977.50. That does not divide evenly in cents, so two people pay 244.38 and two pay 244.37, which add up to exactly 977.50.

Common tipping guidelines

Typical tip percentages vary widely by country and service type — often 10–15% for casual dining and 15–20% for full-service restaurants where tipping is customary. Check local norms if you're travelling, since some countries don't expect tipping at all.

Another example

A 64.80 bill with an 18% tip shared between two people: the tip is 11.66, the total is 76.46, and each person pays 38.23.

A clean split

A 120.00 bill with a 20% tip for three people gives a tip of 24.00, a total of 144.00, and exactly 48.00 each, so no rounding is needed. When the total does not divide evenly, the leftover cents are added one each to the first shares, so every share is within a cent of the others and they always add up to the total.

Before you add a tip

• Check whether a service charge is already included on the bill, so you don't tip twice.
• Decide whether to tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the full total and enter that amount as the bill.
• For a split where people pay different amounts, take the total shown and divide it by hand.

How the three boxes behave

• The tip percentage starts at 15 and the number of people at 1, and the results update as you type.
• If the people box is empty, or holds 0, the tool treats it as 1 person. A number like 2.5 is not rejected, but it cannot be split into whole shares, so it gets a single rounded share.
• A tip of 0% is fine. A negative tip, or a bill of zero or less, shows an error asking for valid, positive values.
• There is no currency symbol, so the amounts are in whatever currency your bill is in, and all three results are shown to two decimals.

How leftover cents are shared out

The calculation is done in whole cents. 100.00 with a 0% tip split three ways is 10,000 cents, which gives 3,333 each with 1 cent over, so the result reads 33.34 for 1 person, 33.33 for 2 people. With an 18% tip on the same bill the total is 118.00, or 11,800 cents, and the three shares are 39.34 for 1 person and 39.33 for 2 people. A tip of 10% on 19.99 is 1.999, shown as 2.00, and splitting the 21.99 total two ways gives 11.00 for 1 person and 10.99 for 1 person.

Odd percentages

Decimal percentages work. A 12.5% tip on a 48.60 bill is 6.075, which displays as 6.08, for a total of 54.68.
