Text to Speech
Have any text read aloud using your browser's built-in voices, or download it as a WAV file. WebToolGrid never receives your text — see "How it works" for how voices are handled.

How it works
Play uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis (the Web Speech API) to read text aloud instantly. Which voice engine that is depends on your browser and device: most voices run locally, but some cloud-based voices (for example, in Chrome or Edge) send the text to the browser vendor's service. Download audio instead runs a separate offline neural voice (English, US) entirely in your browser to produce a WAV file; the first use downloads that voice from a third-party host and caches it.
Voice availability
The list of available voices comes from your operating system and browser, so it varies by device — some browsers offer dozens of languages and voices, others only a handful. There's currently no way for a website to add new voices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the speech as an audio file?
Yes, as a WAV file. The Download audio button runs a separate offline neural voice (English, US) inside your browser to generate the file. The first time, that voice is downloaded from a third-party host and cached by your browser. Play uses your browser's own voices instead, and can't be saved as a file.
Why do the available voices vary between devices?
The voice list comes from your operating system and browser rather than from this site, so it depends on what's installed on your device. Desktop browsers typically offer more voices and languages than mobile ones.
Is any of my text sent to a server?
Never to WebToolGrid — we don't receive the text you type. Download audio generates the file on your device. Play uses whatever voices your browser or operating system provides; most run locally, but some (for example, some cloud-based voices in Chrome or Edge) send the text to the browser vendor's service. If that matters, use Download audio.
