How it works

Drag inside the blue selection box to move it, or drag a corner handle to resize it. Everything outside the selection is dimmed so you can see exactly what will be kept. Precise X/Y/width/height fields are also available if you need exact pixel values.

Need a perfectly circular crop instead — like a profile picture? Use Circle Crop Image instead.

A worked example

Load a 4000 × 3000 pixel photo and the selection starts as the centered 80%: 3200 × 2400 pixels, beginning at X 400 and Y 300. To turn it into a 16:9 banner, keep the width at 3200 and set the height to 3200 × 9 ÷ 16 = 1800, then drag the box to frame the subject. The saved file is exactly 3200 × 1800 pixels.

Good to know

  • Cropping cuts pixels out of the original without resampling, so the remaining detail is unchanged. Resize afterwards if you also need smaller dimensions.
  • There is no aspect-ratio lock, so work out the numbers yourself. Common shapes are 1:1 for a square post, 4:5 for portrait posts, 3:2 for photographs and 16:9 for banners and video thumbnails.
  • The smallest allowed selection is 10 × 10 pixels, and the box can't be pushed outside the image.
  • PNG stays PNG with transparency. Any other format is saved as a JPEG at 92% quality, which can add very slight recompression.
  • The image is redrawn, so camera metadata such as location is not copied to the cropped file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drag a crop box visually?

Yes. Drag inside the box to move it and drag a corner handle to resize it. The X, Y, width and height fields underneath let you enter exact pixel values when you need them.

Can I lock the crop to a ratio like 16:9 or 1:1?

There's no ratio lock. Type matching dimensions into the width and height fields, for example 1600 by 900 for 16:9 or 1080 by 1080 for a square, and drag the box into position.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

The pixels inside the crop are untouched. A JPEG is saved again at 92% quality, which can add a very slight loss, while a PNG stays lossless.
