How images are aligned
Images are placed edge-to-edge in the order you added them — left to right for the horizontal layout, top to bottom for vertical. They're aligned to the top (horizontal) or left (vertical) rather than centered, so if your images are different heights or widths, the shorter or narrower ones leave a transparent gap rather than getting stretched or centered to match.
The result is always saved as a PNG, regardless of what format your source images were in — this preserves the transparent gaps mentioned above, which a JPEG (no transparency support) couldn't represent.

What happens if the images are different sizes?
Side-by-side layout aligns images to the top and pads the shorter ones; stacked layout aligns them to the left and pads narrower ones — each image keeps its own original size. The padding is transparent, not a solid color.
Can I control the order the images are merged in?
Images are merged in the order you add them. Remove and re-add a file to move it to the end of the order, since there's no drag-to-reorder control.
What file format is the merged image?
Always PNG, regardless of the format your source images were in — this preserves any transparent padding between differently-sized images, which a JPEG can't represent.
