The formula
discount amount = (price × discount%) ÷ 100 · final price = price − discount amount
Worked example
A product priced at 2,000 with a 25% discount: the discount amount is (2,000 × 25) ÷ 100 = 500, so the final price is 2,000 − 500 = 1,500.
A quick shortcut
If you only need the final price, you can skip the subtraction step by multiplying the price by (100 − discount%) and dividing by 100. For a 25% discount, that's price × 0.75.
Common mistakes when comparing sale prices
- Comparing "% off" claims without checking the original price is genuine
- Forgetting that stacked discounts multiply rather than add
- Assuming tax is already included in the discounted price
Frequently asked questions
Does the discount amount include tax?
No. This calculator applies the discount to the price you enter. Most retailers calculate tax after the discount is applied, so add tax to the final price separately if needed.
Can I calculate two discounts stacked together?
This calculator applies one discount at a time. For stacked discounts, apply the first discount, then run the calculator again using the resulting final price as the new original price.
Why is 50% off then 50% off not the same as 100% off?
Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. Two 50% discounts stacked leave you paying 25% of the original price, not 0%.
