Each page is labeled "current / total", like 3 / 12. Custom formats (like a prefix or Roman numerals) aren't currently supported.

Will this overwrite content already on the page?

It's placed in a margin area, but if a page's existing content extends very close to the edge, it could overlap — check the result before using it.
