How it works
Lower quality settings allow the JPEG encoder to discard more fine detail, which shrinks the file size at the cost of some visual sharpness — usually barely noticeable above 60-70% quality, more visible below 40%. This tool always saves as JPEG, since quality-based compression is a JPEG feature that PNG (a lossless format) doesn't have.
Choosing a quality level
- 80-95% — visually near-identical to the original, modest size reduction
- 50-80% — a good balance for web use and email attachments
- Below 40% — noticeable quality loss, useful only when file size matters most
Frequently asked questions
Why does the output always download as JPEG?
Quality-based compression (the sliding scale from 10-95%) is a JPEG-specific feature. If you need to keep another format, use the Image Format Converter instead.
Will compressing reduce the image dimensions?
No — this only adjusts JPEG quality, not width or height. The picture stays the same size, just with more or less fine detail preserved.
