Why the output is always WAV
Your browser can decode many audio formats but can't re-encode directly back into a compressed format like MP3 without a dedicated encoder library. WAV is uncompressed and can be generated reliably without one, so that's what this tool outputs. For a real, compressed MP3 instead, use the MP3 Encoder tool, which adds that dedicated encoder.
How it works
The browser's Web Audio API decodes your file into raw samples, and the tool writes those samples out as a standard 16-bit WAV file, keeping the same number of channels. The sample rate follows your browser's audio setup, typically 44.1 or 48 kHz. Which input formats work depends on the codecs your browser includes; MP3, AAC/M4A, OGG and WAV are usually fine in current browsers.
Expect a much bigger file
WAV is uncompressed. Stereo at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits uses about 10.6 MB per minute, so a 3-minute song comes to roughly 32 MB, while the same song as a 128 kbps MP3 is around 3 MB. Converting also cannot add back quality that a lossy MP3 or OGG already discarded; it just stores what was decoded without further loss.
Limits and privacy
Input files can be up to 50 MB, and the whole file is decoded in memory, so very long recordings can be slow or fail on low-memory devices. Use the Audio Trimmer to cut a long file down first. WAV is the format to choose for editing software, speech tools and anything that needs uncompressed audio. The conversion happens entirely on your device.

Why can't I convert to MP3 here?
Browsers can decode MP3 but don't include an MP3 encoder, so this tool sticks to WAV, which can be generated reliably without one. For MP3 output specifically, use the site's MP3 Encoder tool instead, which adds a dedicated encoder library for exactly that.
