Cooking Measurement Converter

Convert between teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, milliliters, and liters.

Common cooking conversions

  • 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
  • 16 tablespoons = 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
  • 2 cups = 1 pint, 2 pints = 1 quart, 4 quarts = 1 gallon
  • 1 US cup ≈ 237 ml (a metric 'cup' used in some countries is a rounder 250 ml — close, but not identical)

A note on weight vs. volume

This converter handles volume measurements only (teaspoons, cups, milliliters, etc.). Converting a cup of an ingredient to grams isn't a fixed ratio — it depends on the ingredient's density: a cup of flour weighs roughly 120g, a cup of granulated sugar about 200g, and a cup of butter about 227g, all quite different for the same 'cup' of volume. For weight-based recipe conversions, look up the specific ingredient rather than treating cups as a universal weight unit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a US cup the same as a UK or metric cup?

No. A US cup is about 237 ml, a metric cup (used in Australia, New Zealand, and some recipe books) is a rounder 250 ml, and the UK doesn't use standardized 'cup' measurements in the same way — UK recipes typically use weight (grams) instead. This converter uses US customary measurements throughout.

Why can't this tool convert cups to grams?

Grams measure weight and cups measure volume — converting between them requires knowing the ingredient's density, which is different for flour, sugar, butter, liquids, and so on. A cup of feathers and a cup of lead take up the same volume but weigh very differently.
