Why size conversion is approximate
Shoe and clothing sizes were standardized independently in the US, UK, and Europe, each using a different measuring system and starting point — there's no single global standard. On top of that, individual brands frequently run larger or smaller than the standard chart ("vanity sizing" is especially common in women's clothing). Treat these results as a solid starting estimate, not an exact guarantee — when it's available, always check the specific brand's own size chart or actual body/foot measurements.
Common reference points
- Men's shoes: US size ≈ UK size + 1 (a US 9 is a UK 8)
- Women's shoes: US size ≈ UK size + 2 (a US 8 is a UK 6)
- Women's dresses: UK size ≈ US size + 4, EU size ≈ US size + 32 (a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40)
- EU shoe sizes are based on foot length in Paris points (2/3 cm each), which is why they don't line up with US/UK in a simple pattern
How the lookup works
The tool does not calculate a size. It finds the row of a fixed chart whose value in your "From" system is closest to the number you typed, then reads that row's value in the "To" system. The charts cover men's shoes from US 7 to 13, women's shoes from US 5 to 11, and women's dresses from US 0 to 18 in steps of two. Dresses have no cm column, because clothing is not sized by foot length.
Worked examples
Men's shoes, US 9: UK 8, EU 42 and a foot length of 26.7 cm. Women's shoes, US 8: UK 6, EU 39 and 25 cm. The same US number means a different foot for each chart: a men's US 8 is 25.7 cm, while a women's US 8 is 25 cm. Women's dresses, US 6: UK 10 and EU 38.
Sizes between rows and outside the chart
- A value between two rows goes to the nearer one: men's US 8.3 returns EU 41.5 because it is closer to the US 8.5 row. An exact tie goes to the smaller row, so men's US 8.25 returns EU 41 (the US 8 row).
- A value outside the chart snaps to the end of it. Men's US 15 returns EU 46 (the US 13 row), and a women's US -2 returns EU 36 (the US 5 row). The result always says which standard size it used.
- Entering a foot length works the same way: 26.2 cm on the men's chart is matched to the 26 cm row, which is US 8.5 and EU 41.5.
- Size 0 is valid for dresses: US 0 is UK 4 and EU 32. Leaving the box empty shows "Enter a size to convert."
What is not covered
There is no children's, men's clothing, wide-width or half-size dress chart, and the men's shoe chart has no 12.5. Brand size guides take priority over any converted number.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't men's and women's shoe sizes convert the same way?
Men's and women's shoe sizes are numbered on different scales even within the same country's system — a US women's size and a US men's size for the same physical foot length are roughly 1.5–2 sizes apart, not the same number. This tool keeps the two size types separate for that reason.
Why did my exact size not match a listed row?
These charts only list the standard, commonly published sizes (typically in half-size steps). If you enter a value between two listed sizes, or one outside the covered range, the tool matches you to the closest standard size and notes that in the result.
Is CM foot length more reliable than a size number?
For shoes, yes — measuring your actual foot length in centimeters and comparing it to a brand's chart is generally more reliable than converting a size number, since size numbers vary more between brands than centimeter measurements do.
What is a US 9 in UK and EU sizes?
It depends on the chart. A men's US 9 is UK 8 and EU 42. A women's US 9 is UK 7 and EU 40. Pick the right size type first.
What does the note in brackets after my result mean?
It appears when your number was not an exact chart size. The tool tells you which standard size it matched, so you can see that, for example, 8.3 was treated as 8.5.
Can I convert children's shoe sizes?
No. The tool only has men's shoes, women's shoes and women's dresses. A child's number would be matched to the nearest adult row and give a misleading answer.
